The Director

James Cameron
James Cameron was born in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada, on August 16, 1954. He moved to the USA in 1971. The son of an engineer, he majored in physics at California State University but, after graduating, drove a truck to support his screen-writing ambition. He landed his first professional film job as art director, miniature-set builder, and process-projection supervisor on Roger Corman's Battle Beyond the Stars (1980) and debuted as a director with Piranha Part Two: The Spawning (1981) the following year.

In 1984, he wrote and directed The Terminator (1984), a futuristic action-thriller starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Biehn, and Linda Hamilton. It was a huge success. Such a 80's film. Everything from the technology, to the fashion, to the indoor smoking, the cheesy stop-motion, and the urban decay of Los Angeles. Don't get me wrong, that's part of the massive charm and historical importance of Terminator.

James Cameron gets a lot of stuff right here. A lot of stuff wrong, but it anything wrong is easily dismissed as forgettable and/or part of the retro-charm.

A phenomenal idea and the imposing physical presence of Arnold make The Terminator a good movie with several iconic sequences, but the sequel is a good deal better.

Dated in almost every way: the hair, the fashion, the music, the special effects, the snippets of COBOL flashing on screen. And I know you always have plot trouble when dealing with time travel, but this pushes it way too far beyond the usual paradoxes. Nonetheless, it's a really fun (and still thrilling) movie and I actually like the super-synthy score. Although the sequel tops it in most respects, at least there's no annoying Ed Furlong in this one.

Stain

Already a classic. Was one practically as soon as it came out

A new look on sci fi, nothing interesting. Acting is pretty dull.
