A good mystery thriller, casting Holmes and Watson as 14th century monks. Along the way it explores adolescent desire, love of literature, religious persecution and questions of integrity. It's not very complex, I suspect the book runs quite a bit deeper. The direction is competent if not especially stunning, Connery is typically charismatic, and Slater hasn't yet become annoying. The big reveal is a little on the unsatisfying side, but the trip getting there is worthwhile.

Strange, very satisfying little movie. Wait 'til you find out what the title means

A Medieval detective story is something rather unusual and the brutal depiction of Medieval life is a welcome addition to the catalog of Medieval films.

Filmed in the harsh yet dynamic mountains of N. Italy the story manages to weave a complex tale of murder all the while criticizing those within the church who are impious without falling into the trap of condemning Christianity as a whole.
