Clint Eastwood's character is just amazing in this film. Without him, it would be just an avarage melodrama.

It's a ridiculously racist comedy; then it tries to be poignant, and fails. Every character is merely a one-dimensional caricature, excepting Eastwood and 1 or 2 of the Hmong characters. I had fun watching it, though.

Simple, manly, predictable cinema - the essence of Eastwood. Not my type.

Clint here plays the kind of "working class hero" who only exists in the fantasies of peasants who cling desperately to the illusion that their state is the only desirable one... then thrusts the character into a more complex story than you might expect. This movie invites comparisons to Kurosawa's _Ikiru_, yet measures up to them quite well
