Backdrops

The Director

Richard Linklater
Self-taught writer-director Richard Linklater was among the first and most successful talents to emerge during the American independent film renaissance of the 1990s. Typically setting each of his movies during one 24-hour period, Linklater's work explored what he dubbed "the youth rebellion continuum," focusing in fine detail on generational rites and mores with rare compassion and understanding while definitively capturing the 20-something culture of his era through a series of nuanced, illuminating ensemble pieces which introduced any number of talented young actors into the Hollywood firmament.

There is something remarkably honest about this films depiction of a hurried romance. Hawke's Jesse has the bravado and awkwardness that characterize young men, while Delpy's Celine is enchanting with her caution, independence, and conviction. Their romance is fascinating as it progresses from stolen glances, to abstract intellectual conversations about their meeting, and finally arrives at a desperate passion. I was enthralled by, and in love with, this complex couple.

I have to say that this was exactly what I expected it to be. That's fine, though, because what it is is a really solid, believable story about two realistic, flawed yet likable people. Even better, there are no unnecessary side plots, no superfluous fluff, nothing that distracts the viewer from the focus of the story. It ain't earth-shattering, but it's a very satisfying little flick.

Stain

Holy smokes. A love story that's about two people actually communicating rather than boinking straight away

This film got into my blood years before i developed a real taste of cinema. It enhanced in my mind like cancer or for better; yogurt. The main theme seems to be the romance between two young people which is rendered to the bone by Hawke and Delpy. But I believe it is mostly about ones self worth and respect to the series of moments that composes his/herself. Goes best with Waking life, Slacker, Tape and the sequel B. Sunset.
