Storyline
I'm Still Here is a portrayal of a tumultuous year in the life of actor Joaquin Phoenix. With remarkable access, the documentary follows the Oscar-nominee as he announces his retirement from a successful film career in the fall of 2008 and sets off to reinvent himself as a hip hop musician. The film is a portrait of an artist at a crossroads and explores notions of courage and creative reinvention, as well as the ramifications of a life spent in the public eye. |

Casey Affleck
Caleb Casey McGuire Affleck-Boldt (born August 12, 1975), best known as Casey Affleck is an American actor and film director. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, he played supporting roles in mainstream hits like Good Will Hunting (1997) and Ocean's Eleven (2001) as well as in critically acclaimed independent films such as Chasing Amy (1997). During this time, he became known as the younger brother of actor and director Ben Affleck, with whom he has frequently collaborated professionally. In 2007, his breakout year, Affleck gained recognition and critical acclaim for his work in Gone Baby Gone and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which gained him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

As a piece of performance art this is brilliant. The lengths that Phoenix and Affleck go to in order to fulfil their experiment are hard not to admire. However, it all seems rather redundant. The act of it was never really believed (and the admition of it being a hoax hardly surprised the industry or viewers) which begs the question why did they all bother? Yes they wanted to make a point of the relationship between the music and film industry and journalism/reporting but it's nothing we don't already know. In years to come, if Phoenix is a more respected actor it might be worth it, otherwise it's a bit of a waste of time.
