Recommended for my viewing pleasure by my sister was Sherlock Holmes, for which Hans Zimmer was nominated for the Best Original Score Oscar and for which Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer were nominated for the Best Art Direction Oscar (film year, 2009; awarding year, 2010). The other nominees in these categories were:

Apparently, my sister loved the good detective's newest revamp so much, she purchased it for herself, and just as I was walking in on Easter Sunday to my family's humble abode, my dad was popping it into the DVD player for his own amusement. So, opportunist that I am, I jumped right into the easy chair and partook of the visual appetizer to Easter dinner. It's elementary, really. (And, yes, I will be tossing that line out a few times during this review, I'd wager).

In this latest incarnation, Robert Downey, Jr. plays the good detective, and Jude Law portrays his begrudging assistant Dr. Watson. Directed by Guy Ritchie (ex Mr. Madonna), the film opens to Holmes, eccentric inventor and private investigator extraordinaire, down on his luck and in need of a good case. Fortunately, he and Watson are turned onto the murders of several poor souls, including the threat to a young woman, by someone calling himself Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong), a seeming trafficker in the black arts. Holmes manages to stage the capture of Blackwood, but while in prison, Blackwood warns Holmes of three more impending deaths that will change the world. Blackwood is hung and later pronou...

Without expecting much I actually really enjoyed this. The action is spot-on and it pays just enough reverence to the source material without being a straight-ahead adaptation. I await the obvious sequel with some anticipation.

It's an entertaining Hollywood picture with a really stupid evil main character (Lord Blackwood, "the vampire", wait... what?). While Law and Downey Jr.'s acting is great, the guy who plays vampire and the woman who plays Sherlock's girl are almost disgusting. Ah, and Sherlock's super powers (fast thinking) is not human at all. I think the way it presented makes it look like he's a robot. Or a terminator... Holy... They're the same! Case solved.

Spunkie

The new age Sherlock barely saves the day. Logical explanations lacking the viewer involvement and intelligence widely misses the mark. The rest is a lame villain, slapsticky action and chemistry between Downey Jr. and Law.

thaklos

Downey and Law imbue their roles with charisma. That said, the films unimaginative narrative does not complement Ritchie's typical film making, and the result feels like it was shackled by its script. It has too much flair to be a simple update of the Holmes character, but not enough originality to be something unique, and ends up feeling uninspired and overlong. The predictable plotting, cardboard supporting characters, and melodramatic finale make for a forgettable experience.

rrees

Jude Law and Robert Downey have great chemistry as Watson and Holmes (a career high perhaps for the former) and there are a lot of excellent quips and one liners. The Sherlock Holmes stuff is just some Victoriana decoration that is hung over the typical action movie set pieces of fights, chases and general running around. It's amusing mainstream stuff and only Mark Strong out of the rest of the cast manages to contribute a decent performance.
