Storyline

Whether you love him or hate him, there is no question that George W. Bush is one of the most controversial public figures in recent memory. W takes viewers through Bush's eventful life -- his struggles and triumphs, how he found both his wife and his faith, and of course the critical days leading up to Bush's decision to invade Iraq.

Backdrops

The Director

Oliver Stone
William Oliver Stone (born September 15, 1946) is an American film director and screenwriter. Stone became known in the late 1980s and the early 1990s for directing a series of films about the Vietnam War, in which he had participated as an American infantry soldier. His work frequently focuses on contemporary political and cultural issues, often controversially. He has received three Academy Awards: Best Adapted Screenplay for Midnight Express (1978), and Best Director for Platoon (1986) and Born on the Fourth of July (1989). The British newspaper The Guardian described him as "one of the few committed men of the left working in mainstream American cinema."

Stone's movies often use many different cameras and film formats, including VHS, 8 mm film, and 70 mm film. He sometimes uses several formats in a single scene, as in Natural Born Killers (1994) and JFK (1991).

Brolin brings a ton of charisma, but the film ultimately doesn't have that much to say, and ends up feeling pretty incomplete. Definitely an interesting attempt, but I suspect ten years would have improved the outcome.

Like _Nixon_, this is a bit kinder a portrait than I would have wanted. It's also not as good a film. However, it is interesting in that it's an all-star-cast major release that's about a pathetic failure. At least Tricky Dick could be mistaken for a statesman once in a while. I find it thoroughly watchable, never noticed or cared that it's over two hours long, and I'm keenly interested in the subject besides

It's unclear whether or not this is supposed to be funny. That's never a good sign. The film also tries to be profound or insightful, which is okay, but it just takes the easy way out. On about 3 key character issues regarding the former President the film basically says "X IS BECAUSE OF Y, END OF STORY." Example: "GEORGE W. BUSH BECAME PRESIDENT BECAUSE HE NEVER EARNED THE RESPECT OF HIS FATHER." Come on. That's just pedestrian crap. I felt talked down to as an audience member.
