Storyline

It's 1954, and up-and-coming U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston's Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. He's been pushing for an assignment on the island for personal reasons, but before long he wonders whether he hasn't been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister. Teddy's shrewd investigating skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open. As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals "escape" in the confusion, and the puzzling, improbable clues multiply, Teddy begins to doubt everything - his memory, his partner, even his own sanity.

The Director

Martin Scorsese
American film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, and film historian Martin Marcantonio Luciano Scorsese made the short films while he attended New York University's film school; these include “What's a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This?” (1963), “It's Not Just You, Murray!” (1964), and his most famous short of the period “The Big Shave” (1967). This came shortly after seriously considering entering into priesthood. He entered a seminary in 1956 then opted to direct his focus toward film; he graduated from NYU as a film major in 1964.

Scorsese made his first feature-length film in 1967, “Call First”, which was later retitled “Who's That Knocking at My Door”, which was followed by “Boxcar Bertha” (1972). The Film “Taxi Driver” (1976) won the Palme d'Or at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival, and received four Oscar nominations, including Best P

tiring at one point, but a great movie overall
Leonardo DiCaprio (Teddy Daniels) has surpassed my expectations, I would of never imagined that he could pull of such a role.

I am honestly surprised by the depth of he's character and the depth of the movie all together. At first glance I imagined this to be a horror movie, considering the trailer and how the movie starts off, however this is not the case for Shutter Island, it's more of a psychological/mystery/thriller then anything else.

I strongly recommend this movie to everyone, it's indeed long and it tends to beat around the bush a lot but the ending of the movie makes it all worth while.

An excellent story given a competent execution. The wartime flashbacks seem a bit superfluous given that the rest of the story is about memory. Otherwise a good thriller of rising tension.

Wasn't really a big fan of this movie, but I discovered one of the most amazing songs off of the closing credits: Max Richter's chillingly beautiful reconfiguration of Dinah Washington's 'This Bitter Earth'.

I liked that one - A decent suspence/thriller thing. People have said the twists are too obvious but I was alright with it. Yeah, it certainly isn't a never-seen-before one but, otoh, I didn't feel it was telegraphed so much in advance.

Maybe I am not enough of a cynic?

Surprisingly cliched, overwrought, and predictable. Still well directed and acted, though. Fantastic score.

This film is very well constructed, and the intensity of the acting is commendable. Unfortunately, all of this effort surrounds a very rote plot, which left me feeling tired and let down. I am behind most genre films, but this particular variety is frequently annoying, as was the case here. I wish I could have enjoyed this expertly made film more, and I hope that other people aren't as jaded in their evaluation of the long expected twist.
