Storyline

A man with a low IQ has accomplished great things in his life and been present during significant historic events - in each case, far exceeding what anyone imagined he could do. Yet, despite all the things he has attained, his one true love eludes him. "Forrest Gump" is the story of a man who rose above his challenges, and who proved that determination, courage, and love are more important than ability.

Backdrops

The Director

Robert Zemeckis
Robert Lee Zemeckis (born May 14, 1952) is an American film director, producer and screenwriter. Zemeckis first came to public attention in the 1980s as the director of the comedic time-travel Back to the Future film series, as well as the Academy Award-winning live-action/animation epic Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), though in the 1990s he diversified into more dramatic fare, including 1994's Forrest Gump, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Director.

His films are characterized by an interest in state-of-the-art special effects, including the early use of match moving in Back to the Future Part II (1989) and the pioneering performance capture techniques seen in The Polar Express (2004), Beowulf (2007) and A Christmas Carol (2009). Though Zemeckis has often been pigeonholed as a director interested only in effects, his work has been defended by several critics, including Dav

The History of the OSCARS - Best Picture Winners part IV
1990 – Dances With Wolves (*****)
Rich in detail, emotion and respect. Costner has such a strong handle on the mood and pace of the film, it’s hard not to get taken away in the majestic sweep.

What should have won?
Goodfellas – Despite Dances With Wolves’ excellence, Scorsese’s gangster film is a masterclass in film form and a visceral delight.

1991 – The Silence of the Lambs (*****)
A remarkable adaptation; form, excitement, performance and technicals all come together perfectly to create an unforgettable film that will stay with the viewer forever.

What should have won?
The Silence of the Lambs – As much as I’d have loved Beauty and the Beast to have won, I cannot look past or find fault in Silence.

1992 - Unforgiven (*****)
Clint Eastwood’s film could have been subtitled, ‘The Death of the Western’. Using his own persona and changes in censorship and audience involvement Eastwood creates a work of adult brilliance.

What should have won?
Unforgiven – To deconstruct a genre while showing it so much respect is an impressive feat and one that Eastwood achieves perfectly.

1993 – Schindler’s List (*****)
It’s hard to describe the affect that this film has on a viewer, with no tr...

I fucking hate this movie. Most of the people I know like this movie, but I can't. I've made myself watch it 3 times to see if I could finally understand the madness that had somehow gripped the minds of everyone I know.

Nope. I still fucking hate it.

I loved it as a kid, and still enjoy it despite understanding it's hokiness and very problematic politics.
