Storyline

At the height of WW2, a group of high-ranking German officers hatched a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, and seize power of the military command in order to end the war. The operation was codenamed "Valkyrie", for the emergency plan that was meant to be used in case of a revolt against the Nazi government. This plan had been modified by the conspirators to ensure their success, but for various reasons the plot failed when finally carried out on 20 July 1944. The conspirators of the inner circle were shot after a kangaroo trial or sentenced to death soon after.

I think every American my age has seen _Top Gun_. As a result of that movie's massive success, Cruise has long been one of the poster boys of Reagan-era U.S. militarism. As such, I accepted him as an officer in the Wehrmacht surprisingly readily. Singer keeps it all at the right pace, and the writers throw in enough humor and irony to keep it from wearing you out. In short, this movie is no masterpiece, but considerably better than the "Tom Cruise is nuts" crowd has been saying for months

I was expecting a sub-par mindless popcorn flick about Nazis, but I was pleasantly surprised. I was also expecting a problem with the film by knowing how the entire scheme would end, but I found myself on the edge of my seat for different reasons, saying "oh my God, they got close. Oh my God, they got REALLY close. Oh my God, I had no idea they were this close." The movie is expertly executed, and a surprising find that people have kind of brushed to the side.

Good acting, but it has too many shortcomings to be a good war film: better portrayals of other coup members whose roles are close to being extras, fewer simplifications reducing credibility of some situations and definitely some gradation of tension: it has more of a feeling of a reconstruction then a suspense film. Last but not least, where's the 'Ride of the Valkyries'? Choosing it instead of this forgettable soundtrack as the lejtmotif for the film could help it make a lasting impression.
