Nice enough movie, but it has no life or soul. Too cold & lifeless.

A very chilling and finely crafted film. Not that I expected any less from the Coens. For this one they largely trade in stylishness for iciness, and as a result the movie feels darker, colder, and perhaps a bit emptier than their other great films. When I say "empty" I don't necessarily mean it in a bad way, but make no mistake, this movie is by far their most nihilistic.

Well-done and fairly engaging (even the controversial ending wasn't that bad to me), but I was also disappointed by the emptiness of it. A lot of it is retreading the same ground covered in previous Coen works. Not that I mind people repeating themselves that much, but I didn't feel there was anything all that fresh or exciting going on here. I find this kind of nihilism a bit boring and old hat. I thought there ought to be more focus on Jones. He was the true soul of the story.

Stain

Not really a thriller, but a deconstruction of a straight thriller. The Coens' quirky characters and style of dialogue are starting to become their cliches, but this is still a unique film that's worth seeing

A powerful story, I recognize all the many attributes of the film. It's excellent but not something I'm likely to watch again.

Simply not a film with themes that connected with me on a direct visceral level. Not really a fault of the film, more that the film story doesn't really overlap with my own experiences. This means I can recognize the excellence of the film only in an academic sense rather than tapping directing into the elements at play.
