The Director

David O. Russell
American film director and screenwriter David Owen Russell has been praised for the loose, comic energy that characterizes his work, and is notorious for his explosive confrontations with cast members. He has won 2 Independent Spirit Awards for writing and directing as well as the Audience Award at Sundance, and a Writers Guild of America Award.

Russell was awarded Best First Screenplay and Best First Feature from the Independent Spirit Awards for his first work, the independent dark comedy “Spanking the Monkey” (1994).  In addition, David’s first work also won him the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.

Most recently, The Fighter (2010) received seven Academy Award nominations which was Russell’s first work after a six-year hiatus.

Academy Awards Best Picture 2011
Hi folks, I know how much y'all love the Oscars, so I've made it my business to check out all of this year's nominations for Best Picture.

Here for your reading enjoyment, are the 2011 runners and riders.

127 Hours
What's it about? A guy gets his arm trapped while out hiking. He has to chop it off to escape.
Is it any good? Yes. Very good. If you like 'Into the Wild' and 'Touching the Void' you'll love this.
Will it win? No. Beaufoy and Boyle just got a gong with Slumdog Millionaire. Won't happen again.
Should it win? No. While it's very good, it's a one-dimensional story.
Trivia: This is why you really should tell someone where you're going before you set off into the wilderness. Especially alone.

The Kids Are All Right
What's it about? Two teenagers conceived by artificial insemination make contact with the guy who donated the sperm. By the way, their parents are lesbians.
Is it any good? Yes. Surprisingly good. Although it's hard to go wrong with Annette Benning and Julianne Moore.
Will it win? No. Compared to the likes of 'Ordinary People' (winner in 1983) it doesn't hold a candle.
Should it win? No. It's good, even very good, but it doesn't have that wow factor.
Trivia: Whoever thought that sperm donation was a good idea?

The King's Speech
What's it about? King George VI, the present Queen of England's father. Stammering.
Is it any good? Yes, it's excellent. It works both as a historical drama and a very personal story.
Will it win? No.
Should it win? Yes. It has bo...

This film's stark depiction of adversity lifts its conclusion above saccharine, as Ward's triumph is realized through intense performances by a fantastic ensemble. Bale's performance is particularly striking, but he is just part of a fantastic group that includes a subtly inspirational Adams and a confused but purposeful Wahlberg. While this is a traditional underdog story this film exceeds its genre by detailing the harsh characters who participate in Ward's struggle for success.

An ideal film to be shown on HBO between The Soloist and The Pursuit of Happiness. Long, a bit exhausting, with a native message that hard work together with fixing up your family issues will lead you to guaranteed success whatever you do. And that crack is bad for you. I especially regret the amazing acting by Bale (who tends to act great in mediocre flims and not so great in superb movies, wtf?) as brother and Melissa Leo as mother. Mr Wahlberg is a mistake.
