Storyline

After eliminating General Zod & the other Kryptonian arch-villains, Ursa & Non, Superman leaves Earth to try to find his former home world of Krypton after astronomers have supposedly found it. When he finds nothing but remnants, he returns home to Earth - to find out that Lois Lane is engaged to a relative of his boss, and that Lex Luthor is at it again - after swindling an elderly, terminally ill woman. The psychopathic Luthor, whose plans to destroy California failed because of Superman's heroics, vows vengeance against the Man of Steel and contrives a new sinister plot - using the crystals of Krypton to build a continent that will wipe out most of North America! Embedded in the continent's structure is Kryptonite - the lethal substance that is Superman's only weakness. Upon learning of Luthro's sinister scheme, Superman must again race against time to stop the psychopathic Luthor before millions - possibly billions - are killed.

There's not much new here (in fact, the film seems to pride itself on mimicking the Reeve movies) but it's pretty entertaining, especially considering the length. The tension and relief is there, the special effects are superb, and there are occasional good jokes. The biggest mistakes are in casting. Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth are both bland. Lois Lane needs to be a character, needs some personality. I never got the feeling from Bosworth that she was anything more than Superman's bitch.

Stain

Way, way too many logic problems, even accounting for the fact that Supes is a fantasy creation. Plus I'm just too much of a grownup to like this sort of thing much anymore. I can just see Michael Moore doing a documentary called "Superman Is A Jerk" about why Supes doesn't stop global warming or any other *real* problems

Superman gets a decent once-over that beats Superman III and IV, even if it's a pale imitation of the film that started it all. Brandon Routh and Kevin Spacey were excellent casting choices; Kate Bosworth was a mistake. The special effects were great, but the film still makes one yearn for Christopher Reeve's version. The story was also full of holes: why did Superman leave to find phantom Krypton in the first place? How will the ending affect the franchise? Why so many slo-mo flights?

Spunkie

Superman hanging above the earh for a minute of tranquility, that works fine. And nothing else is.
