Storyline

The biography of Ron Kovic. Paralyzed in the Vietnam war, he becomes an anti-war and pro-human rights political activist after feeling betrayed by the country he fought for.

The Director

Oliver Stone
William Oliver Stone (born September 15, 1946) is an American film director and screenwriter. Stone became known in the late 1980s and the early 1990s for directing a series of films about the Vietnam War, in which he had participated as an American infantry soldier. His work frequently focuses on contemporary political and cultural issues, often controversially. He has received three Academy Awards: Best Adapted Screenplay for Midnight Express (1978), and Best Director for Platoon (1986) and Born on the Fourth of July (1989). The British newspaper The Guardian described him as "one of the few committed men of the left working in mainstream American cinema."

Stone's movies often use many different cameras and film formats, including VHS, 8 mm film, and 70 mm film. He sometimes uses several formats in a single scene, as in Natural Born Killers (1994) and JFK (1991).

A definitely underrated film. Of course, the Vietnam war and the problem of its veterans is not a hot topic anymore, 'Platoon' is much more entertaining and the devious patriotism of Ronnie may be irritating, but its great a piece of movie-making, which never crosses the borders of propaganda or good taste. Worth seeing if only for a good performance of Tom Cruise.

Stain

Powerful human drama that's also not afraid to get crazy. From the days when it seemed like Oliver Stone could do no wrong

Provides an exceptionally personal account of the American struggle with the Vietnam war. The film is well shot, although the message occasionally feels a little too heavy handed, especially the beautiful, but monosyllabic, shots in Vietnam. Cruise is perfect as Kovic, he manages to beautifully convey the crushing weight of his disability, and the anger associated with it. Not easy to watch, and occasionally overbearing, this film delivers a commendable vision of a troubling time.
