City of Angels
Spoiler Alert!    Spoiler Alert!    Spoiler Alert!    Spoiler Alert!    Spoiler Alert!    Spoiler Alert!
This is a sappy romantic movie in all the right ways. Directed by Brad Silberling, it stars Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan. "City of Angels" is based on a 1987 movie by Wim Wenders called "Wings of Desire." Wenders gets credit for the script.

Cage and Andre Braugher play angels; in "City of Angels," angels haunt humans, watching them from above. They are messengers sent to retrieve the dying, easing their entry into where ever it is they go. Cage's character, named Seth, envies the five senses enjoyed by humans, and he falls in love with Ryan's character, a doctor. Seth trades in his wings for humanity, the two fall in love, and Seth enjoys the feelings, sensations, and physical experiences of being human. With Meg Ryan. Not a bad trade for many people, I'm sure.

It's not the best movie I've ever seen, but I did enjoy it. There's no depth, nothing metaphysical, metaphorical, or meta-anything - just a straight romance. Cage and Ryan are great. Cage can do soulful better than any actor alive, and he lays it all out in his role as the angel. If you haven't seen "Wings of Desire," go along for the ride with "City of Angels." I'm not sure the two movies have any cross over, so if you like one you may dislike the other. Intensely. Or maybe not. Who can tell?

I saw "City of Angels" first and enjoyed it a great deal. In my humble opinion, "Wings of Desire" is the better movie, but many disagree.
