The Director

Mel Gibson
Mel Colm-Cille Gerard Gibson, AO (born January 3, 1956) is an actor, film director, producer and screenwriter. Born in Peekskill, New York, Gibson moved with his parents to Sydney, Australia when he was 12 years old and later studied acting at the Australian National Institute of Dramatic Art.

After appearing in the Mad Max and Lethal Weapon series, Gibson went on to direct and star in the Academy Award-winning Braveheart. In 2004, he directed and produced The Passion of the Christ, a controversial, yet successful, film portraying the last hours in the life of Jesus Christ. Outside his career, remarks by Gibson have generated accusations of homophobia, antisemitism, racism, and misogyny; he has previously attributed the statements to his alcoholism.

Extremely sappy, but I loved it as a kid, never failed to make me cry.

FREEDOM!!! I have to say this is one of my top battle films for it's era. It has action, love, and humor. One of best well rounded films. I would watch it more than once a year.

Braveheart has some great, ruthless battle sequences and a generally good story, but the endless amounts of ridiculous historical inaccuracies (which would've been forgivable if there weren't so damn many of them) and the way it gets hokier and hokier toward the end drag it down a lot.

Much better than I expected when I first saw it. Gory as hell, but no wonder it won Best Picture

Despite rampant problems with historical accuracy and a bunch of idiotic pontificating about freedom in a Medieval context, the power of the story laid out by the director and screenwriter (albeit a completely non-historical story) overcomes the complaints.

In the end the film make not tell you much about William Wallace, but it manages to speak volumes about the hero of the story - a man willing to do anything for his country and family.
