The Director

Steven Spielberg
Steven Allan Spielberg (born December 18, 1946) is an American film director, screenwriter, film producer, video game designer and studio executive. In a career spanning five decades, Spielberg's films have covered many themes and genres. Tintin - The Secret of the Unicorn (2011)
Plot - Tintin, an intrepid reporter, purchases an antique model ship named The Unicorn at a fair unaware that several other interested parties are after it, some for nefarious means. He's soon drawn into a race to discover the secret of the Unicorn......

Thoughts - First off, I have read the books as a child but recall them being a bit dry for my tastes, so there's no particular referential love for the source material from me. I think they've done a decent job transposing it onto the big screen, the motion capture, I actually thought it was pulled off quite well here. The facial expressions, bane of previous attempts, weren't really a distraction here even if at times Tintin appeared to be a bit wooden.

Speaking of which I did fined the actual character of Tintin to be pretty bland. Snowy and Haddock as well as The Thompson twins are relied upon to provide colour and Serkis as Haddock was enjoyable. The comic moments with him were often the best parts of the film. The Thompson twins were a bit hit-and-miss for me.

It's action packed and Tintin's detective skills are pretty basic compared to some of the leaps of logic in Herges original stories, but I suppose that's the universal audience they're catering for. Not to say it isn't interesting enough for adults with the script even popping in a bestiality joke. Overall it's a fun, action orientated family film that hits the right notes more often than not.

However I can't shake the feeling a better film could have been made if they'd just went with live action.
